When Can I Travel Again?

Hi Everyone!

There are many people much like me who always have to have a trip to look forward to. I can hardly get home from one trip before I plan the next one. And it could be that at any given time, I have 3 trips planned. My wandering spirit needs something to look forward to. However, the Coronavirus Pandemic and Stay at Home orders aren’t so bad. I have accomplished tons of things around the house that I have always deemed I didn’t have time to do. I enjoy cooking so time in the kitchen is a treasure. I also enjoy spending time with my daughter although much of this time is making sure she is doing her schoolwork and virtual dance. (Whew! That is a job in itself!) But the thing that is hands down the hardest for me is not have a trip planned, not having the anticipation, not being able to research my destination and find hidden gems. I have gone back and forth between booking and waiting. Little is known regarding when travel bans will be lifted or what travel will look like after Corona so I decided to do a little research in the hope that I would know when travel is safe again.

What has to happen to travel again:

  1. The State Department must life the Level 4 travel advisory.
  2. The Center for Disease Control (CDC) has to give an “all-clear” for travel, even within the US.
  3. The World Health Organization (WHO) gives a thumbs up.

Other signs that it is ok to travel:

  1. Schools and businesses reopen.
  2. Your Travel Agent will actually book the trip.
  3. You can buy travel insurance which is very difficult right now with the uncertainty.

But, does this mean it will be safe to travel? Maybe. Many in the industry believe that travel will rebound very slowly. There will be a focus on safety which means there may be a delay between removal of regulatory restrictions and individuals being comfortable to travel.

Maybe most important are the actions that are not signs that travel is safe, such as:

  1. Reopening of tourist attractions which is profit driven, not safety driven.
  2. No more Corona cases.
  3. When politicians say so.

Once the restrictions are lifted, consumer confidence will play a large part as to when the industry has rebounded. It is suspected that hotel stays and roads trips will be the first followed by air then international travel. The best guess is that this will start in 2-3 months in the follow order:

  1. Close to home visits — within 3-4 hours of home
  2. Summer leisure travel in nature
  3. Road warrior business travelers
  4. Small conferences/meetings
  5. International travel
  6. Major conventions
  7. Cruises

The US is at risk to lose $570 Billion in tourism dollars this year alone and 7 Million tourism jobs are on the line as well. It is in the best interest of our economy for travel to resume as quickly as possible. The best guess from several sources is that summer vacations will consist of road trips and trips close to home. A trend is indicating that travel insurance purchases are up for travel after August 1st. Cruising will probably not resume until next year sometime. However, if travel doesn’t rebound quickly, there could be deals to be had.

Bottom line…there are a lot of variables and it is difficult to determine when we can travel again. That doesn’t mean that we cannot research our destinations, maybe find a few new ones, and even book our trips as long as we are careful that we will get our money back or can reschedule if we cannot travel.

Thank you so much for the kind words!! Even though this is months later, it is still very uncertain. Things are starting to open up, but the sentiment from consumers is still so uncertain.

When you’re ready to plan your next trip, just let me know! I would love to help you!

Hmm it looks like your site ate my first comment (it was super long) so I guess I’ll just sum it
up what I submitted and say, I’m thoroughly enjoying your blog.

I as well am an aspiring blog blogger but I’m still new to
the whole thing. Do you have any tips and hints for newbie blog
    writers? I’d genuinely appreciate it.

Hi! Thanks for the kind words! I really enjoy blogging, but I’m not too consistent. I guess my advice would be to decide how often you want to blog and set a schedule/reminders so that it will be consistent. Also, I would go ahead and list a wide range of topics you want to blog about. As you read articles or information that relate to your topics, save them. I usually have 4-5 different sources I use for each blog. Most importantly, at least I believe so, is to make sure your personality shines through. Give some facts, some personal experiences, but keep it casual. I find the most enjoyable blogs are ones where you feel like someone is talking to you and gives you information. Anyway, good luck! And I look forward to reading your first blog!
